Thermal destruction of PFAS during full?scale reactivation of PFAS?laden granular activated carbon

چکیده

Granular activated carbon (GAC) is the most widely used and well-established treatment technology for removal of per polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contaminants from drinking water wastewater. After GAC has reached end its useful service life become “spent carbon,” it common practice in industry to thermally treat a process known as reactivation. The reactivation volatilizes destroys adsorbed at high temperatures restores near-virgin state so that can be reused. Since advent PFAS regulatory actions, questions have arisen about effectiveness destruction given their thermal stability lack documented study on this new topic. In light this, thorough program testing was carried out full-scale facility during load contain PFAS. employs multihearth Herreschoff furnace downstream abatement train includes oxidizer, spray quench cooler, dry injection scrubber, baghouse. All inputs outputs system were tested targeted compounds fluoride (total hydrogen fluoride). Under typical operating conditions, demonstrated both full >99.99% through system. Additional key findings include: (1) large portion occurs furnace, before oxidizer; (2) mass balance close 61.4%; (3) emission levels significantly lower than available public data manufacturing emissions.

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Selection

Granular activated carbons are a very versatile group of adsorbents, with capability for selectively adsorbing thousands of organic and certain inorganic materials. From medicinal uses of powdered carbons in ancient Egypt, through charred interiors of whiskey barrels, carbon has been activated and used as an adsorbent for centuries. Granular vapor phase activated carbon media was first widely u...

Chemical Regeneration of Exhausted Granular Activated Carbon Used in Citric Acid Fermentation Solution Decoloration

An improved chemical regeneration of the granular activated carbon (GAC) exhausted by the color (pigments and pollutants) from citric acid fermentation solution (CAF) was investigated. In the experiments, improved means were adopted to advance the traditional chemical regenerating method and the adsorption capacity of the first time renewed GAC is 103% of original GAC. Using oxidan...

Separation Efficiency of Glucose and Maltose from Industrial Effluent by Granular Activated Carbon

This paper describes the performance of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) to adsorb and separate glucose and maltose solutes from the industrial effluents by adsorption process. In this study, the capability of Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) to adsorb glucose and maltose were experimentally examined. Commercial GAC (mesh 12-20), supplied by Sigma Aldrich company in...

The Effect of Metals on Thermal Regeneration of Granular Activated Carbon

BACKGROUND The primary role of granular activated carbon (GAC) in water treatment is to adsorb organic compounds that could potentially harm humans or impart tastes and odors. Several hundred water utilities in the United States and Europe use GAC for this purpose. While the GAC is in service, however, it can also accumulate metals, either by precipitation or by adsorption of metal-organic comp...
